I wrote you last week about the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. For reference, see that email at the bottom of this email.
Well, early voting has now begun for this special election on April 1st. Our efforts matter now more than ever!
This election will decide who controls the Court — the progressives or the conservatives. If progressive candidate Judge Susan Crawford wins, the Court will be able to redraw the heavily gerrymandered state’s Congressional lines, very possibly transforming a 6-2 Republican advantage to a 4-4 split.
To make the situation even scarier, Elon Musk has poured more than $10 million into the state to back the ultra conservative candidate, Brad Schmiel.
Many of you were so generous in response to my first email and MVP has now maxed out to Judge Crawford’s campaign (via the WI Dems). SO, I want your donations to now go DIRECTLY to Judge Crawford’s campaign.
Thank you!
Al
P.S. I’m not expecting any of you to match Elon’s ten million, but maybe you’ll surprise me
P.P.S. Here’s the aforementioned email from last week:
Dear Current (?), Former (?) Supporter,
We Minnesota Gopher fans have a longstanding rivalry with the Wisconsin Badgers. But we still want to be good neighbors and support Wisconsin’s progressive candidates.
MVP just sent a contribution to Wisconsin to help the progressive candidate for the State Supreme Court, Susan Crawford, win this all-important race, which will decide the balance of the court. And in Wisconsin that will make a world of difference. The court currently has a 4-3 balance favoring Democrats, but it’s a retiring Democrat who the winner will replace.
When the Democrats finally won the majority of the court in the last election, the court reversed the extreme gerrymandering which had given Republicans an almost-veto-proof majority in the State Legislature. After the court’s reversal, the Stage Leg. balance changed dramatically.
But the winner of this election will address the heavily gerrymandered Congressional map which currently gives Republicans a 6-2 majority. If Crawford wins this State Supreme Court seat, the State Supreme Court will create a fair map which would very probably yield a 4-4 result.
With an almost deadlocked U.S. House of Representatives, this could determine the chamber’s balance.
Al
P.S. Often I use the P.S. to tell a joke and make another ask. But as I write this email, I’m looking at the White House. And I’m just not very happy about it.
