Al Franken to Leave Air America Radio
On the January 29th edition of The Al Franken Show, Midwest Values PAC founder Al Franken announced he will leave his radio show on February 14. He also told his national radio audience that he’s currently considering whether or not to run for the US Senate in his home state of Minnesota.
To listen to that announcement, please click here.
See you later, loser!
Get some ratings and maybe your chump ass can stay on the air!

Nice to see the trolls hang out here… in Honor of Grace’s exhibition of idiocy (he does get numbers), Al will get $25 from me the second he announces his campaign.
— Tim Jan 28, 04:33 PM #
It has been a pleasure to listen to someone wh will actually speak the truth and make sure that the right wing lies were debunked
— Ronn Daignault Jan 28, 09:19 PM #
Thank You Al for keeping me smiling through some tough times. Run, Al, Run!

Here’s a message I left on a CBS blog to diss some unkind remarks toward dear friend Al:
http://www.showbuzz.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/29/people/main2409505.shtml
Most of you ignorant, slavish ditto-heads don’t have a clue, and just spout unresearched stupidity.
Al Franken is owed over 4 million from Air America Radio, which he will most likely never see, but his main interest in moving to Minnesota, his home state, over a year ago, is to legally be able to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Norm Coleman. Coleman ended up with the late Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone’s Senate seat, Al’s personal friend, after the private plane crash that took the lives of Senator Wellstone, his wife, daughter, staffers and crew in 2002.
I am a great fan and will miss Al’s show tremendously. He had the best of all the progressive shows on either AAR or Jones. You could always count on learning something from Al’s show, and when he made an occasional error, he would CORRECT it…unheard of! Al’s show had a fantastic roster of intelligent guests and regulars that deeply explored the political news of the day. One always went away from one of Al’s show with new knowledge of the current political scene plus new insights into the latest Bush “administration”’s latest incompetent, inhumane moves. (I can’t wait till this horrific time in our history is OVER…this is the second King George reign we need to oust to regain our freedoms.)
Al, your show will be sorely missed, but we look forward to your Senate race!
— Glosie2001 Jan 28, 10:40 PM #
Bye Al Franken, darnit anyways, we’re gonna miss you like crazy. Best of luck in the Minnesota race.
— Marjorie Ann Drake Jan 28, 11:26 PM #
I agree that Al’s show was the best on AAR. His program always has top-flight, informed guests (except for Dittohead Mark). I’ve learned much from his show, and all laced with Al’s brand of humor. (I LOVE “hate mail of the day” and its theme. I laugh every time.) I will miss Al & hope he resurfaces soon.
— Mary Bellotti Jan 29, 11:36 AM #
The only thing worse than not have Al Franken to wake up to would be to find Angelina Jolie missing from your bed. I will not only miss you, Al, but your fabulous regulars. Life will definitely lose some of its “tum”.
— David Dansky Jan 29, 03:30 PM #
Best of luck Al. I’m going to miss your show a lot. I was a lifelong registered Republican when I started listening. I have become the equivalent of a born again liberal. I am proud to say I worked for Move On, making calls in the recent election. I never imagined our great country could be dragged down this path of facism, and religious extremism. What happened to our country? It’s going to take a lot of hard work to unwind the mess this incredibly evil, incompetent cabal has created.
— MMcGuire Jan 29, 07:25 PM #
Thanks for the laughs. And Thanks for sharing the pain. You provided the most important service. You will be missed. Look forward to your floor speeches in the senate.
— George Layburn Jan 30, 02:20 AM #
I guess I’ll have to go back to listening to WORT, Madison’s doctrinaire and boring “leftist” station.
Though I found Al Franken aggravating and self-serving much of the time, he has been a positive influence, and deserves much of the credit for the resurgence of the “Democrats.”
As for the Senate, I’m not so sure. He certainly can do no worse than any “Republican.” He will find that his comedy will have very limited value in “the world’s most exclusive club.”
Then there is the likelihood that Al Franken will almost certainly vote for any amount of billions of dollars sent to “Israel,” and will support anything the state of “Israel” does to its neighbors and to the “Palestinians.” The state of Minnesota, wherein I lived for four years, can do better, and probably will.
— John Hamilton Jan 30, 08:58 AM #
I will miss Al’s show tremendously. It was the best progressive show on radio with the best guests. Run Al!
— Loren Spector Jan 30, 01:37 PM #
So..is there gonna be any show? What’s the deal? We just got xm radio this December to listen to Al – our regular radio took air america off the air. Please – don’t leave me with just Rush and Dr. Laura!
— liz Jan 30, 01:42 PM #
Well there goes my $29.99, just paid to get the podcasts. Love your program, Please run for the Senate, they need you. And yes, they need a joke of the day along with the opening prayer!
— rod ivy Jan 30, 02:10 PM #
Well, some important things came up with me recently that interfered with my listening to Al’s show, and I tune in today for the first time in a few weeks and he is LEAVING! Hey, I’m sorry, already! I’ll probably feel guilty about this for years! Way to lay on the guilt, Al.
— Chris J Jan 30, 02:48 PM #
I’m really going to miss you, Al. If the senate thing doesn’t work out, please come back to radio.
— Buzz in Columbus Jan 30, 04:33 PM #
Mr. Coleman, what is that stuck to back of your jacket? Oh, it is just a target.
— paul heywood Jan 30, 07:46 PM #
Al, it has been great to have you on my iPod on many a long evening walk. I will miss your intelligent guests and your “sidekicks” too. You were always courteous, never strident, always fair. So long, Al, wish I could vote in Minnesota!
— Vitanuova Jan 30, 10:11 PM #
Al, your show is the best on Air America, and I really hate to see you move on. No one else does as good a job at keeping us informed and entertained. I like the way you always have intelligent guests with whom to discuss the latest news and right-wing outrages—all the things we need to know, but otherwise might not (unlike some people who talk to themselves for three hours, and maybe take a few calls from some of their sheep.) We’ll miss you, and I hope that you will be back on the airwaves again soon, doing what you do best.
— Susan Jan 30, 11:00 PM #
Very sorry to hear that you’re leaving. I thought you had one of the best radio shows of all time.
Best success to you in whatever you decide to do, but if you wanted to make me happy you’d keep doing your radio show.
— dave kirkeby Jan 31, 04:02 AM #
Senator Franken… got a nice ring to it! This Minnesotan would crawl over broken glass in sub-zero weather to campaign for you.
— Judi Brooks Jan 31, 08:35 AM #
Sorry to hear about the end of the Al Franken show. I always enjoyed his show because of his tongue-in-cheek humor and his approach to scewering the right wing. Other progressive talk show hosts sound whiny or rant too much, but Al handled himself well.
— Jay Northrop Jan 31, 01:26 PM #
Boy, could they use a good guy like you on the Seanate floor. Go Al, GO!!!
— Debbie Mitten Jan 31, 01:38 PM #
Damn, I hate that I will not have your show to listen to during my work day! On the other hand, with you in the Senate maybe C-Span will actually be enjoyable to watch. And in the meantime at least we still have Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Maher. Best of luck in the race.
— Anne Hill Jan 31, 03:46 PM #
Al Franken running for the senate—wonderful. Now you can take on Norm Chameleon.
— Deb Pleasants Jan 31, 09:16 PM #
I was so blissfully ignorant until I tuned you in. Life was a happier time, Bush was a strong leader. Our country was in tough-man hands, nothing could be wrong!
Our great and moral leader Bush was fighting the War on Tearrrrrrr by golly and no satan-worshipping librul was going to stop him!
Yep… happier times.
Your show was a bitter pill to swallow. My belief system was torn apart. Republicans=tough, morally superior, and not corrupt.
Well, you showed that to be false on a daily basis,
as well as many other falsehoods peddled by our friends in the not-so-liberal-media.
You always brought these depressing governmental problems to light with humor and a glimmer of optimism when proposing solutions.
You’ll make a fantastic senator.
When you get elected, I’ll be sure NOT to buy you a golf trip to Scotland.
— Donnie Gillespie Jan 31, 10:14 PM #
Hate to see you go, Al…but hope you hed for the senate. Sara and I will raise money for you in Colorado!
Elizabeth
— Elizabeth Bennett Feb 2, 02:32 PM #
Al Franken is the biggest joke on the american scene. I am happy he’s running for Senate in Minnesota. He makes Norm Coleman a shoe in. He would be a bigger embarassment than a drunk Jesse Ventura could ever have been. He is supposed to be a comedian. He is not, never has been and never will be funny. And he will never be a Senator for the great state of Minnesota. Hey Elizabeth, you raise that money for the biggest loser in Minnesota political history. Mark my words, it’s not going to happen, not on my vote.
— Mark Feb 3, 04:25 PM #
I couldn’t aggree with Mark more. Too bad about the Air America thing Al. How does Rush’s shoe in your ass feel? Go smoke some weed or drive you hybrid or whatever you do with your time, somewhere else. Like Canada
— Rusty Bucket Feb 4, 09:16 AM #
I often disagree with Al (in fact, on nearly every issue) but at least when I think he’s totally off base on an issue it’s because he’s gathered the evidence and made an honest mistake, and not due to the wanton disregard for truth that typify the right-wing pundits who were once the only option for radio politics.
Godspeed, Al, and where we differ I can only hope that one day you’ll come around!
— John Nelson Leith Feb 4, 12:22 PM #
Well, I hope the new owners of AAR have REALLY deep pockets, because when Al leaves there goes the franchise. Thom Hartman is a good man, but as a radio personality he will be the best AAR can show now. That’s not saying much. Rude Randy and the other non-personalities just won’t sustain the subscribership the way Al could.
Best of luck, Al. I will miss the belly chuckles I always got listening to your show.
— PJ Parkinson Feb 6, 05:41 PM #
Best of luck on the Senate run—I’ll write a check.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Al Franken Show on Air America—it was my favorite. I tuned in regularly to get the facts from you and your excellent guests. I will miss Tom Oliphant, Joe Conason, Christy Harvey and your other regulars. I don’t know where I will get the same level of information without having to do extensive research and googling on my own.
Best wishes, Al, and thanks for the eye-opening show.
— Sue Kidder Feb 7, 01:55 PM #
Wow. I am having trouble believing some of the incredibly ignorant comments on this blog. For those who seem to think he was driven off the air, or that this is bad news, do you realize that this was Al’s intention all along? He HAS to leave the show (by law) so he can run. That is also the reason he moved back to Minnesota, and he made it clear that he would quit the show when the time came for him to seek election.
I am going to miss hearing him every day on his show, but I am going to love having him for a senator. We have had a void in our progressive leadership since Wellstone died, and Minnesotans are excited to have Al here. Don’t doubt that he can get elected. we are still a very liberal state – and Coleman only won on a fluke. Senator Franken, we look forward to your freshman term!
— local boy Feb 8, 02:19 PM #
Thank you for helping me define my political allegiances, and for teaching me what progressive means.
— Mike Feb 11, 01:48 PM #
Great show, I’ll miss you. You really helped me through the dark time in November, 2004. If you run – all the best!
— - Kyle Ann Feb 11, 02:17 PM #
Sorry to see you go – but check out Al Franken: God Spoke on ClickStar – in the Jersey Docs area. Danny DeVito filmed a special introduction.
— Mike Feb 11, 03:48 PM #
I always thought you were the fairest, funniest
personality on AAR (or anywhere else) and your on-air guests were the very best. Thanks for all the intelligent insights and commentary.

Thank you Al. We will miss your show. I was always thanking God for the commitment you had for the truth. I never lost hope as long as I heard your show. You’re a great American.
— Andres Feb 12, 12:13 PM #
Thanks Al. Your fair, smart, low-keyed, scientifically analytical, extremely informative, and a lot of fun to listen to. Our loss is the Country’s gain. Just don’t let them change you when you get to Washington.
— dick salisbury Feb 12, 03:05 PM #
first phil hendrie, now al
well, at least i will save my thirteen bucks a month for xm radio. I will miss your honesty, your humor, and your alness. radio will not be the same without you, and hopefully, the senate wont be the same with you.
give em hell, al

Can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed your show over the past year…you have opened so many eyes to the wickedness of the right.
Wish you the best in your run for the Senate…they need a whole lot more like you!
— Elaine Lyon Feb 13, 01:30 PM #
Let’s see…
Failed comedian
Failed radio personality
Now you want to add failed politician to your resume…. good luck!
— Jerry Feb 13, 02:19 PM #
Mr. Franken, I know you are an intelligent person but you have not grounded much of your political commentary on anything of substance. Typical liberal stuff….
— Rob Feb 13, 02:47 PM #
I see you have a bit of “hate mail” wishing you luck in your Senate run. You ever notice that conservatives can’t debate? If it’s not sound bites and rhetoric, its rudeness and name calling. Enjoy the mail and the best of luck in your run! I look forward to watching you debate in the Senate!
— Jeanette Harris Feb 13, 03:39 PM #
They are afraid of you, Al.
We need more guys like you who will stand up to the right wing bully boys and combat their hatred and fear mongering.
Your quick wit and brains will be a force in the Senate. Go in with both (rhetorical) guns blazing my friend!

Al is an idiot, to use a word he always uses to call someone he disagrees with. Did you watch his video? I don’t trust anyone who talks out of the side of their mouth. That a sign of lying.
— David Drake Feb 13, 07:31 PM #
Al, I will miss your show on Air America but I wish you mwere closer to the East Coast so I could bump into you. I will always be proud of the fact that I was on line with you and Tom Davis at auditions for “The Bitter End” in the 70s BEFORE you went on to SNL fame. I just wish you kept your phone lines open more often and that I at least got to play “Wait, Wait, Don’t Lie To Me” and been a part of the Peabody award winning game show. Prersonally, Air America is not Air America anymore without your show,,,And I so miss Katherine Lampher too.
